Words to Pause for Wednesday!

Journal Entry from 1841364/27/2006

“…the vision people hold of the world to come is but a reflection, with predictable wishful distortions, of the world in which they live.”

-James Baldwin, “The Fire Next Time”

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

-Socrates

I think these two quotes go nicely together. The first one is a negative and some days, I think, a realistic look at the world. The next reminds us it doesn’t have to be. We live day to day dreaming of a better future in 10, 20, or even 50 years, but what about now? Sometimes it feels impossible to create any kind of change being just one person. Anyone who has stood next to an ocean or looked up at a night sky knows this feeling, insignificant and small; how can just one person do anything that can make a difference? But we are living in a time that the people before us were only able to dream about. So we can do better and be better. Because there is always a better version of ourselves.
