Secrets.
Everyone has one.
Some are bigger than others.
And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

Kate Sedgwick’s life has been anything but typical. She’s endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there’s a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She’s also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to
fall in love with Keller Banks.

They both feel it.
But they each have a reason to fight it.
They each have a secret.

And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

My Review:

So, you know when you start a book expecting to be one thing and then does a total one-eighty and leaves you breathless? No?!

Read. This. Book.

If you’re like me and cannot stand it when someone puts emphasis on a movie or book they love, then stop reading this and read this book. Or if you like to read what other think before you take a chance, read away! But seriously either way, taking a chance on this book will NOT be a mistake.

Kim Holden has an amazing ability to draw you in and make them think at the same time. For example, using everyday experiences like one of many wonderful phone conversations Katie, aka “Bright Side,” has with her best friend and lead singer of Rook, Gus. They share their ups and downs, but every time the conversation ends it as if Katie was speaking directly to me.”Go do epic.” As she makes her way through school, work, and various friendships it becomes apparent there is something the optimistic Katie is hiding. The story progresses and we are held captive as the story comes to its climax and her secret is revealed and we watch as the true affect she has on those around her become the prominent focus.

This book starts in the point of view of Kate, a young woman who leaves Southern California for college in Minneapolis. What appears to be a tale of young love and self realization is quickly turned on its head. As Katie makes her way through classes, roommate problems, family issues, and keeping up with friends she some how takes us on a journey of self-realization and understanding by illustrating a complexities of life and forcing us to reflect.

How many times can I say a book has touched my life? Not many, but “Bright Side” by Kim Holden is defiantly one of them. Incredibly sarcastic, wonderfully heart felt and amazingly real, “Bright Side” tugs on the most practical persons emotions and can leave them a blubbering mess. I spent the last 50 pages clutching my heart with tears running down my face. I laughed, cheered, screamed, and cried and loved every moment of this book.

In closing, I want to use my favorite quote for the book:

“She doesn’t just look on the bright side, she fucking lives there dude.”
